The Ultimate Guide to London Pub Gardens in Summer

When the sun comes out in London, everything changes. Suddenly every pub garden is packed, every terrace is fought over, and finding a good outdoor drinking spot becomes the most important mission of the week. Here is where to go.

London does not get that many perfect summer evenings, which makes the ones it does get feel almost sacred. The moment the forecast shows sun and 22 degrees, the entire city migrates outdoors. And nothing beats a pub garden on a warm London evening. The trick is knowing which ones are worth the effort and which are just a couple of picnic benches next to a dual carriageway.

We have spent years cataloguing the best outdoor drinking spots in the city. From sprawling riverside terraces to hidden walled gardens, fairy-lit courtyards to actual treehouses, these are the pub gardens worth seeking out when the weather gods are smiling.

The Riverside Terraces

Nothing says London summer like a pint by the Thames. The city has a remarkable number of riverside pubs, and the best of them have terraces that feel almost Mediterranean when the sun is shining.

Hammersmith, West London
The terrace at The Dove, perched right over the Thames in Hammersmith, is one of the most beautiful outdoor drinking spots in London. The pub has been here since at least the early 1700s and the river views are unchanged. Watch the rowing crews glide past, the light playing on the water, and you will understand why literary figures from James Thomson to Ernest Hemingway have been drawn to this pub.
Arrive early on sunny evenings. The terrace is small and fills up fast.
Limehouse, East London
Sir Ian McKellen's tiny Thames-side pub in Limehouse has a small balcony over the river that is pure magic on a summer evening. The pub has been here since 1583 and the views towards Canary Wharf from the balcony are a spectacular collision of old and new London. Dickens knew this pub. Now you will too.
The balcony holds about ten people. Get there before 5pm on sunny days.
Hammersmith, West London
If The Dove is the intimate Thames terrace, The Old Ship is the big group option. The massive riverside terrace fits hundreds and the atmosphere on a sunny Saturday is electric. Live music, cold pints, boats on the river and the particular kind of joy that only a London summer day can produce.
Perfect for groups. Book a table or just turn up and find a spot along the river wall.

The Secret Gardens

Some of London's best pub gardens are hidden away behind unassuming exteriors. These walled gardens, courtyards and secret terraces reward those who know where to look.

Islington, North London
The Albion's walled garden is a genuine oasis. Walk through this handsome Georgian gastropub and out the back, and you will find a secluded garden surrounded by high walls and greenery. It feels like a private garden in the countryside, not a pub in Islington. The food is excellent too, making this perfect for a long summer lunch.
The walled garden is the draw. Book for Sunday lunch and spend all afternoon here.
Hammersmith, West London
The Stonemasons Arms has a lovely garden in the heart of Brackenbury Village that turns magical as the sun goes down. Sourdough pizzas, craft beers and a warm atmosphere make this a neighbourhood favourite. It is the kind of garden that makes you never want to go inside. On warm evenings, this is one of the best places to be in West London.
The fairy lights come alive at dusk. Time your visit for golden hour.
Kensington, West London
The tree-shaded garden at the back of The Windsor Castle is one of Kensington's loveliest outdoor spots. Ancient trees provide dappled shade, the 1820s pub provides the character, and the location on Campden Hill Road means it never feels as crowded as the central London alternatives.
The garden has natural shade from the trees, making it comfortable even at midday.

The Big Ones

Sometimes you need a pub garden with serious capacity. For big groups, birthday drinks or just the sheer joy of a massive outdoor space, these deliver.

Hampstead, North London
The sprawling garden at The Spaniards Inn, right on the edge of Hampstead Heath, is the quintessential London summer destination. The pub has been here since 1585, the garden is enormous, dogs are everywhere and the walk across the Heath to get there is half the fun. This is where London comes to celebrate summer.
Walk across the Heath from Hampstead tube. Arrive before noon on weekends or accept the queue.
Camden, North London
The Edinboro Castle has one of North London's biggest and best beer gardens. Fairy lights, summer BBQs, and a proper pub atmosphere that does not try too hard. Near Regent's Park, this is where Camden locals come when the sun appears. The garden is big enough that you can almost always find a spot.
Summer BBQs are a regular feature. The fairy lights make it even better after dark.
Victoria Park, East London
One of East London's largest beer gardens sits right beside Victoria Park. The People's Park Tavern has a sprawling garden with regular events, DJs and live music, and the kind of outdoor space that could host a festival. The pub has a strong focus on craft beer and the garden transforms through the seasons, with a heated covered area in winter and BBQ sessions in summer.
Check their events calendar. Outdoor cinema nights and summer festivals are common.

The Rooftops

Spitalfields, East London
The Culpeper's rooftop garden and greenhouse is one of London's most unique drinking spots. They grow herbs up here that go directly into the cocktails downstairs. The views across East London rooftops are wonderful, and the combination of a proper pub on the ground floor with a rooftop garden on top makes this one of the most versatile venues in the city.
Head to the rooftop for sunset. They grow ingredients for the cocktails up there.
Finsbury Park, North London
The Faltering Fullback's three-tier treehouse beer garden is genuinely extraordinary. Built over multiple levels in the trees behind the pub, it feels like something from a children's adventure story. Climb up through the levels, each one revealing a different perspective, and you will understand why this is one of the most talked-about beer gardens in London. Nothing else like it exists.
The three-tier treehouse must be seen to be believed. Arrive early as it fills up fast.

Survival Tips for London Pub Gardens

Timing is everything. On the first properly warm day of the year, every pub garden in London will be rammed by 4pm. Get there early or go on a weekday. Bring layers, because London evenings cool down fast. And never underestimate the power of a south-facing garden: they catch the most sun and stay warm longest.

Most importantly, have a backup plan. London weather is fickle. The pubs on this list all have brilliant interiors too, so if the sky clouds over, you are still in one of the city's best pubs. That is the beauty of a pub garden versus a standalone outdoor bar: if the weather turns, you just step inside.
